Pour répondre à The crow, je ne pense pas que ce DVD soit meilleur que le précédent, c'est totalement différent, les chansons, le décors, la formation de NIN ancienne et actuelle, bref, ce sont deux DVD indispensables

Fanny et Lo m'ont beaucoups charier car j'adore le Trent, et ils ont dit pleins de bétises sur lui, genre qu'il aurait pu jouer le "monsieur propre " dans la pub, que c'était un GI-Joe ( la figurine) mais c'est parce qu'ils sont dègues qu'il est très musclé

tu as oublié une petite ressemblance de profil à phil collins
je le préfère avec des cheveux et moin musclé lol
mais cela n'enlève rien à son talent
c'était super sympa de le voir en dvd et les crêpes hummmmmmmmmmmm

je trouve qu' il a une bonne bouille maintenant ,un vrai bout en train

J'ai déjà regardé qqs morceaux: c'est un DVD brut, authentique, sans concession. Ils ont pris le son à la table, sans aucuns effets!! Faut oser: donc il faut un peu de temps pour s'habituer.

Les premiers morceaux sont un peu classiques mais à partir de Something I can never have, ça devient magique. Sur ce morceau, on dirait vraiment qu'il est sincèrement bouleversé.

Ensuite, le show se déploie. Ils descendent un rideau transparent qui couvre tout le devant de la scène et sur lequel est projeté des vidéos: énorme. Right where it belongs est FA-BU-LEUX: un vrai chef-d'oeuvre avec les superbes vidéos. J'adore la réaction du public quand on voit Bush: sifflets et majeurs dressés...

Dommage qu'ils n'aient pas pu transporter tout leur show en Europe..

Le 5e morceau "The Beginning of the End" a été diffusé en partie sur KROQ et il est... comment dire: ENORRRME. De loin le morceau le plus puissant et le plus abouti: un beat imparable à la batterie, des vocals parfaits et hypnotiques, une montée en puissance impressionante. Le morceau n'est disponible que sous une forme incomplète en mp3 avec l'intro de KROQ. Voir ici:

Test en avant première

L’album

Un album assez cohérent et très fortement électronique, le concept du bruit musical est exploité au maximum. On sent très fortement qu’il s’agit d’un concept album avec plusieurs personnages qui correspondent chacun à une voix ou une façon de chanter (dans ce sens l’album rappelle d’ailleurs très fortement l'album "Outside" de David Bowie d’ailleurs). Aucune vraie balade, plusieurs chansons qui se font échos entre elles et surtout un album qui même si il nous a fait un très forte impression à notre première écoute gagnera énormément à chaque écoute supplémentaire. Il faut préciser qu'à la différence de The Fragile ou The Downward Spiral, les morceaux sont clairement séparés, sans transition aucune.


1. Hyperpower ! (1 :42)
Une introduction instrumentale à l’album toute en montée en puissance avec un répétition d’un même thème avec de nouveaux sons / instruments à chaque passage. Une intro très réussie mais qui ne s’enchaîne cependant pas avec la piste suivante. Ce morceau pourrait être une fabuleuse intro de concert en remplacement du classique "pinion".

2. The Begining of the End (2:47)
A nouveau une piste toute en montée et avec une structure rappelant fortement « Metal ». La phrase “This is the Beginning” revient en leitmotiv dans toute la chanson.

3. Survivalism (4:22)
Le premier single, déjà connu par les fuites sur le Net et les interprétations live. Un morceau très riche et comportant un refrain déroutant.

4. The Good Soldier (3:23)
Rythme electro pop, voix très en avant et refrain assez peu marqué. L'ensemble est très mélodieux (le chant est splendide). Un riff dissonant pour une chanson un peu dans le genre comptine qui se finit par 1 min d'instru. Sans doute la chanson la plus grand public radio friendly sans pour autant être simpliste.

5. Vessel (4 :51)
L'introduction est très "rentre-dedans". Chanson très bruyante avec énormément de sons étranges ressemblant à des déchirures électroniques avec un petite couche de piano en surimpression. La voix est assez trafiquée en particulier sur un refrain commençant par un étrange « Oh My God ».
Les deux dernières minutes du morceau sont instrumentales et vraiment hallucinantes.
Cette chanson est la première des deux que nous avons souhaité réécouter et la seconde écoute nous a permis de voir la grand côté barré de cette chanson (en particulier à cause des sons très saturés et des cassures de rythme très surprenantes.

6. Me, I’m Not (4 :52)



7. Capital G (3 :49)
Un démarrage de la chanson rappelant « At The Heart Of It All » mais avec des couplets au phrasé très hip hop et un splendide refrain quant à lui très pop. Encore une fois une chanson qui monte en puissance pendant toute sa durée. Rarement dans l'oeuvre de NIN le phrasé "rap" n'avait été si présent.

9. The Warning (3:39)
Encore une fois une intro très "rentre dedans". Trent joue beaucoup avec la stéréo sur cette chanson qui mêle les gros bruits électroniques et un semblant de guitare sèche dissonante. La voix étouffée de Trent répétant « The time is tick tick ticking away » rend cette chanson très entêtante.
A noter que le bruit qui au spectrogramme fait apparaître la présence et qui se trouvait à la fin de la mp3 de « My Violent Heart », se retrouve telle qu’elle ici. De plus, la fin du morceau nous a fait énormément pensé à "Suck".

10. God Given (3:50)
LA chanson la plus surprenante de l’album et celle qui nous a tous scotché et qu’on a décidé à l’unanimité de réécouter. Un rythme électronique funky couplé à Trent qui chante avec un phrasé très porté hip hop et qui accélère jusqu’à un furieux et disco « Come on, everybody now, sing along, God Given ». Après le refrain un pont avec voix murmuré et tout recommence. Diablement efficace, étonnamment dansant : une réelle surprise !

11. Meet Your Master (4:09)
Chanson un peu plus classique. A nouveau un démarrage à la « At The Heart Of It All » et une montée en puissance. Principale surprise de cette chanson, la fin avec la répétition d’un « Come On Down » qui s’enchaîne sur la chanson suivante. (et qui représente le seul vrai enchaînement de pistes l’album)

12. The Greater Good (4:51)
Une voix murmurée sur un mélange de xylophone et d’instrument à cordes (harpe) très grave. Toute proportion gardée on retrouve des sonorités similaires à celle de la face B
« Baboon Rape Party » de Marilyn Manson.
Vers le milieu de la chanson la chanson devient très calme et dégage une impression de sérénité puis elle augmente jusqu’à un final qui prend la forme d’un long larsen.
Ce morceau est à la fois étrange, glauque et terrifiant. Un morceau à ne pas écouter seul chez soi

13. The Great Destroyer (3:17)
Une intro assez Hard Core avec une voix qui elle serait plus à sa place sur une balade (chant mélodique avec une réverbération). Le rythme est bizarre et destructuré, et on a l'impression que le chant est posé dessus. Puis la voix accélère pour tenir le rythme jusqu’à un « The Great Destroyer » chanté d’une façon très Europe !!! Puis la fin de la chanson (à partir de 2:00) vire dans un grand n’importe quoi électronique (un "dégueulis" de sons saturés et de synthé) rappelant Aphex Twin ou ATR. Un bruit d’eau clôture cette chanson variée.

14. Another Version of the Truth (4:06)
La chanson commence avec un piano seul rappelant still mais avec un fort effet cathédrale qui donne de l’écho. Des interférences en surimpression augmentent puis se réduisent avant de changer et de laisser penser à une invasion de mouches. C'est un morceau planant, sobre et très sombre.

15. In This Twilight (3:34)
Une ambiance de travail à la chaîne dans une usine, une voix assez plaintive. Sans doute la chanson la plus classique et la moins intéressante de cette écoute.
16. Zero-Sum (6:15)
Nouvelle intro à la « At The Heart Of It All » (très techno, grosses basses), une voix trafiquée rappelant celle de la chanson « The Downward Spiral » et un piano qui monte en puissance. Certaines sonorités ou chants style World Music s’ajoutent à cette chanson qui reste assez calme et qui clôture l’album en se faisant de plus en plus calme.

Je viens de me faire les "additionnal content" les 5 titres du summer tour 2006, wahou ! un Trent derrière une grille .... humm!

@Fanny et Lo, va falloir que vous revenez, on avait oubier de regarder ce bonus Live, hier, et çà déchire en decor scénique pour nos petits yeux

+1. Le "additional content" est super en effet: d'abord le summer tour avec un show différent du winter tour: en lieu et place du voile transparent il y a une grille de stores luminescents: impressionant.
Ensuite, il y a les répétitions de 2005 avec un Trent encore chevelu et pas encore "gonflé à l"EPO" Là je risque de me faire tuer...

Conclusion: ce DVD est un "must have" pour toutes et tous!!

"The beginning of the end" :

Morceau qui m'a le moins perturbé pour l'instant dans les nouvelles écoutes des 5 titres. C'est vrai qu'il a un rythme asser connu dans les chansons de NIN, donc c'est surement pour çà.

Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero Preview: Beginning To Solve The Mystery

A track-by-track tour through the album, due April 17.

For weeks, we've been feverishly following the ever-twisting web of promotion surrounding Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero.

From a simple message encoded on the back of a T-shirt, that web — or, more specifically, an Alternate Reality Game — has grown to encompass eerie voice mail, Web sites, Morse code clues hidden in MP3s and messages buried deep within music videos, all building an impressive (and generally terrifying) back story of a future society poised on the brink of spiritual, moral, political and environmental Armageddon.

And we're not the only ones hooked by it all. The buzz surrounding Zero is seemingly growing daily, with every blog write-up and each clue revealed (see "Weird Web Trail: Conspiracy Theory — Or Marketing For Nine Inch Nails LP?"). And while a certain amount of that interest can no doubt be attributed to the unbelievable thoroughness of the Year Zero ARG, even more of it is due to the harrowing believability of the concept Reznor's cooked up for the album.

It's not a stretch to say that the pressure is squarely on Reznor to deliver. After all, you'd be hard-pressed to think of another musician who's released an album backed by this much self-imposed, carefully crafted hype. With each week that passes, the stakes grow a little bit higher, the chances of Reznor falling flat on his face a little greater. How could Zero — which is due April 17 — be expected to support such an epic and far-reaching story line, one spanning 15 years and three continents, involving a cast of hundreds? How could it possibly live up to the brilliantly labyrinthine promotional scheme from whence it came?

You get the feeling Reznor sort of wanted it that way. It's probably the most adventurous, experimental and ballsy album released on a major label since Green Day's revelatory American Idiot, which also happens to be its closest kin, in spirit at least. Because for all its growling electronics, squelching guitars and plinking African kalimbas, Year Zero is essentially a punk-rock album, one born of the same bold attitude that drove Green Day to jettison traditional thinking while making Idiot.

But that's about as far as those comparisons can go. Because there's no jaunty, nine-minute rock-opera pieces to be found on Zero, nary a ballad on par with "Wake Me Up When September Ends." Shoot, there are barely any discernable guitars. Instead, almost every sound you hear on the album has been chopped, ripped, pulled, flayed, destroyed, flattened, squeezed or smashed beneath the massive, ominous bit-mapping of Reznor and co-producer Atticus Ross. Sixty-four minutes of disorienting, pummeling Sturm und Drang roiling atop a rumbling, certifiably bone-chilling layer of white noise that recalls the wind whipping through a war zone.

Album-opener "Hyperpower!" is all piston-like drums and bit-crushed power chords, a doom-laden instrumental that builds and builds to a snarling frenzy before falling away into silence. "The Beginning of the End" follows that with a fog of spooky synths and Reznor's order of "On your knees," all hidden behind a wall of feedback and guttural, demonic growls.

The first single, "Survivalism," is next, a certified stomper powered by a startling loud/soft dynamic and a menagerie of electronic baubles (fans of modern-rock radio are already well acquainted with this one). "The Good Soldier" snakes along atop a meaty bass line and squawking guitars, recalling NIN's "Closer." The verses are filled with Reznor moaning/singing couplets like, "Blood hardens in the sand/ Cold metal in my hand." The chorus makes mention of "I am trying to believe" (the first Web site revealed in the Year Zero ARG), and the whole thing dissolves into a bizarrely lounge-y composition featuring vibraphones and synths.

"Vessel" is a dissonant, dead-ringer for a Shocklee Bros. track, featuring blaring, siren-like synths and thudding drums. The chorus seems to make reference to the drug Opal (another cog in the Year Zero ARG) as Reznor's voice rasps, "My God/ Can it go any faster?/ Oh my God/ I don't think I can last here," and the song features another lengthy, somewhat dancey outro.

"Me, I'm Not" is a down-tempo excursion through howling, barely discernable guitar wails and electronic bleep-bloop that bubbles up like air escaping from an undersea vent. "Capital G" takes swings at American pig-headedness ("Don't give a sh-- about the temperature in Guatemala/ Don't really see what all the fuss is about") and a holier-than-thou commander in chief who just might be George W. Bush ("Traded in my God for this one/ And he signs his name with a capital G"). And "The Warning" tells the tale of a visitation from the Presence, who delivers a warning about mankind's selfish destruction of the environment (one of the earliest discovered sites in the ARG makes mention of a police manual that describes Opal users feeling as though they had been visited by a Presence, where they "feel the rape of Gaia").

"God Given" kicks off with a tribal, electronic spook show, then steadily quickens to a rush of guitars and a huge build that disappears as quickly as it came, leaving a glaring moment of silence and a sharply whispered, machine-gun missive from Reznor. "Meet Your Master" is a raucous, unsettling exercise in crunching chords, backed by animalistic howls and bellows and a supercharged chorus, all of which stop on a dime for a spindly, electro solo that builds again before slipping away into "The Greater Good," the album's most disparate track.

Starting off with Reznor imploring us to "Breathe" in barely there pants, the track slithers around on a sinewy bed of electronic noise and synthetic whispers, bringing to mind a windswept desert-scape. Through the subtle noise, a twinkling kalimba builds and builds, until being swallowed by a scraped and scratched ball of noise, which in turn is quickly eclipsed by a gently plucked guitar line. Then it's all submerged in inky blackness, while a looped vocal repeats the mantra "Slowly ... breathe ... a sin."

That's followed by "The Great Destroyer," which features drums that stomp like a mythical behemoth and Reznor singing, "Oh, they cannot see/ I am the Great Destroyer," in a lilting upper register. It crashes about until the second chorus, when Reznor's vocals are suddenly lifted through the stratosphere, and the whole song collapses into a grinding, shockingly placed drill-'n'-bass section that would make Richard D. James (a.k.a. the Aphex Twin) crack an evil smile.

And then we enter the homestretch. "Another Version of the Truth" follows all that clanging with an equally deafening mass of sonic fuzz and the sound of a piano being played in the other room. Perhaps in the haze, there's the buzz of a fly or the drone of a dial tone. The somber piano line is slowly brought to the forefront, as the instrumental track slows to a beautiful maudlin halt. It all falls away, save a single held note, then another wash of white noise and we're on to "In This Twilight," a grandfather-clock creaker spotted with respirator breaths. Reznor sings about what appears to be the detonation of a nuclear device ("And the sky is filled with light/ Can you see it?/ All the black is really white/ If you believe it").

And finally, we stumble into "Zero Sum," all wobbly, fuzzed-out bass and breathy whispers, sounding much like wind trying to move through ash-filled atmosphere. It all gradually rises, the clanging increases, and a multi-voiced army chants, "God have mercy on us." Then there's the slow washout, more somber piano and finally, the slow, low drone of hornets or the whispering wind. And then, nothing.

And in the end, we're left with a whole new series of questions. Has Reznor detonated the world, or are we to believe — as the title implies — that this is the beginning of something new? Has mankind ignored the warnings for too long, or is there still a faint glimmer of hope in the ashes? And, wildly switching gears, will Year Zero have the same effect on Reznor that Idiot did on Green Day? Will it lead a new generation of fans to rediscover his gloriously dissonant body of work?

As with all great art, there are more questions than answers.

Most likely. After the next record I am out of my contract with Interscope aside from a greatest hits whatever, so I'm sure at some point they will scour the archives for tracks like these. I have no plans to incorporate them into any new real record, though.

Certainly. The entire industry is in flux at the moment, so it's hard to say what would be ideal for NIN as the state of things changes very quickly. I can say with absolute confidence that I would never enter into another one-sided arrangement with a record company again.

Yes, you are clever little buggers out there. It's been great fun watching this all unfold and we're all quite impressed. The funny thing is, we'll watch you collectively instantly solve puzzles we thought were hard while the "easy" ones get you tripped up.

How record can labels fuck things up, part 776:
The "thermo-chrome" details being discussed a month before the record comes out. If you know what I'm talking about, great - if not, I'm not going to call more attention to it.
We came up with that idea as something that would be cool to experience as the consumer. The label blabs about it way ahead of it coming out as a marketing gimmick. "Put a big sticker on the front advertising it!" No. This was meant to be experienced and discovered - not announced ahead of time and ruined. This is the reason nobody at the label knew anything about the ARG (for lack of a better word) before it started - and they still don't know anything about the contents or what's coming. We would have had people discussing "make sure to go see the mural in London coming next week" type shit.
They just don't get it. They sell plastic discs.

Yes, we tend to spend bus rides watching various films, etc. I have many favorites but I can't recommend "Children of Men" enough. I saw it in LA before I left two days in a row - blew me away. Lots of similar themes as Year Zero and the art direction felt like it came out of my head. If you haven't seen this film go check it out.

Even after you said this....I was still not prepared for the creative and consuming Year_Zero project. Thanks for "easing" us into it.

Now after getting a taste of Year_Zero the art form, and part of the album, I can't help but wonder how and when the inspiration struck you to create this future world? I'm sure you probably want everyone to take whatever they want from the Year_Zero experience but if you could maybe shed some light on what you would "like" people to feel or think after hearing the record and experiencing everything you have to offer from your Year_Zero project? Is it a call for more activism to keep humanity (America) from ever reaching that reality?

One of the things that's most exciting to me about this project is the idea that entertainment can be used proactively to create awareness. Awareness is my pretentious moral agenda aside from making the best music I can. If a handful of people get into this project and come out the other side paying a little more attention to what is happening all around them right now - mission accomplished.
